WHAT ARE TREASURE TAGS?

Treasure Tags are a reinvention of your standard plant tags.  Not only do they include the traditional horticulture information, they also include pictures of the treasures left behind and who left them.

With the pictures of the butterflies and moths that lay eggs on the host plant, and the caterpillars that they feed, you can confidently raise just about any butterfly and moth that plant hosts!

Common Milkweed
Asclepis Syriaca

Hardy in USDA zone 4-9 this plant is know for it’s light pink fragrant flowers.  If you see a field of them we highly recommend you stop to smell the flowers!  They rank right up there with lilacs in my opinion!

 The plant grows to be 3-4 feet tall and has large, oval-shaped leaves. The large oval leaves are a favorite snack for all monarch caterpillars!

Orange Butterfly Weed
Asclepia tubersoa

Tuberosa is by far one of the most vibrant milkweed we carry.  The bright orange is sure to stand out in any flower bed.  This beauty is native to much of North America, including much of the United States and Canada. It is hardy in USDA plant hardiness zones 3 through 9, 

This species is a member of the Asclepiadaceae (milkweed) family and typically grows to be about 1-2 feet tall. It is drought tolerant and thrives in well-drained, sandy soil with full sun, but grows well in moist soil and sun conditions.

Contrary to popular belief, tuberosa is the only milkweed that does NOT require stratification.  We planted them straight from the pod and had sprouts within a week.

Pink Swamp Milkweed
Asclepias incarnata

Asclepias incarnata, is well behaved and plays nice with other plants.  You’ll find it stays where it’s supposed to and doesn’t take over your flower bed, making it a delight to add to your flower garden!

Swamp Milkweed grows really well in most sun and soil conditions with little to no care in USDA zones 8-11.

Seed lovers everywhere join the fun of seed trading, so we added 5 Treasure Tags to each set to make sharing even more fun!  You and all your friends can easily have your milkweed counted in our Million Milkweed Challenge, by scanning the QR code featured on the back.  Simply open your cell phone camera, hold it over the QR code, tap the link and hit the Get Started button.  The fun REALLY begins when you  watch the Million Milkweed number grow with each of your submissions!!!

Direct Sowing Instructions:

1. Prepare the seedbed by tilling or raking the soil to remove any debris and create a smooth, level surface.
2. Sow the seeds on the surface of the soil and press them down gently. You can do this in early spring after the last frost, or in late autumn before the first frost.
3. Once the seedlings have sprouted, thin them out so that they are spaced about a foot apart. This will give them room to grow and develop.

Indoor Sowing:

1. Start sowing 2 months before the last frost.
2. Add 2-3 seeds per cell and press lightly into moist soil and cover until signs of germination.
3. Harden off in the spring by putting them in a shaded area and gradually exposing them to more sun for 2 weeks before transplanting.
4. Space them about 12 inches apart.
